I love hush puppies but we all know they aren’t the best thing for you. But I saw this recipe in my google reader and the hush puppy craving came out in full force.
These did not disappoint, they are very yummy!!! I used my medium size cookie scoop to get the balls and that seemed a little big, next time I will use the small one.
Hush Puppies (From: Vintage Victuals, Originally From: Paula Deen)
- 6 cups canola oil, vegetable oil, or peanut oil
- 1 1/2 cups self-rising cornmeal
- 1/2 cup self-rising flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
- 1/2 small onion, chopped
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
Using a deep pot or fryer, heat oil to 350 degrees.
In a mixing bowl, stir together corn meal, flour, baking soda, salt, and Old Bay Seasoning. Mix in the chopped onion.
In a small bowl, stir together buttermilk and egg. Add this mixture to the corn meal mixture, and stir until just incorporated.

OMG I LOVE HUSH PUPPIES! They’re not the same on the West Coast as the “real” kind!
What great looking hush puppies – and there’s nothing wrong with big ones
Hush puppies are one of my favorite guilty pleasures! There’s a really good BBQ joint right by our house and hubby always makes sure to buy me a extra order of hush puppies when he goes there. I’ll have to try making these one day!

I have never had hush puppies. There is a BBQ place near my house that makes them, but I am always to afraid to try them!
